Problem Set #1

Due: Wednesday, January 28

1. Draw the structure of the following functional groups: methyl, amino, carboxyl, hydroxyl, aldehyde and phosphate. Classify each group as nonpolar, polar, acidic or basic and name a biological molecule of which each is a part.

2. Carbohydrates, fatty acids and amino acids are the building blocks for what macromolecules. How does the structure of each building block contribute uniquely to the structure and physical characteristics of a cellular component of which it is a part?

3. Show the calculation for the determination of the thickness of the liposome membrane based on the structure of its components. How would this number change for the thickness of the plasma membrane?

4. List two hydrophobic molecules, two hydrophilic amino acids and draw one amphipathic molecule.

5. Based on structure, which of the following cell types will survive the highest temperature; plant, animal or bacterial? Why?
