Simple CFT splitting diagrams
The Crystal Field Theory approach for first row transition metal
ions requires consideration of the following:
- How many d electrons are there altogether?
- What is the stereochemistry (usually Octahedral or
Tetrahedral)?
- What position are the ligands in the Spectrochemical
series?
You must then choose the appropriate diagram showing how the 5 3d
orbitals lose some of their degeneracy to split into different
energy levels.
