After reading this chapter you should be able to:
  • Describe the composition and functions of different lipoproteins present in plasma: chylomicrons, very-low-density lipoproteins, remnant particles, low-density lipoproteins and high-density lipoproteins.
  • Describe the fuel transport pathway and the overflow pathway of lipoprotein metabolism.
  • Describe the reverse cholesterol transport and its links with other pathways.
  • Outline mechanisms and regulation of intracellular cholesterol levels, including the role of relevant genes, transcription factors, and receptor and enzyme proteins.
  • Comment on laboratory tests used to assess lipid metabolism and the cardiovascular risk of a person.
  • Comment on the relationships between the main component processes of atherogenesis: endothelial dysfunction, arterial deposition of lipids, inflammatory phenomena and their relation to plaque growth and rupture.
