After reading this chapter you should be able to:
  • Describe the general mechanisms of regulation of gene expression, including the role of cis-acting promoters and enhancers and trans-acting transcription factors.
  • Describe the many levels at which gene expression may be controlled, using steroid-induced gene expression as a model.
  • Explain how alternate splicing, alternate promoters and post-transcriptional editing can modulate expression of a gene.
  • Explain how the structure and packaging of chromatin can affect gene expression.
  • Explain how genomic imprinting can result in changes in gene expression, depending on whether alleles are maternally or paternally inherited.
