The essential amino acids are phenylalanine (tyrosine can be synthesized from phenylalanine), the branched chain amino acids valine, leucine, isoleucine, threonine; and methionine and lysine. Histidine and arginine are essential for rats. Some plant proteins are relatively deficient in essential amino acids, whereas animal proteins usually contain a balanced mixture. (See Chapter 2.)
