Cholestatic disease

Cholestasis is the clinical term for biliary obstruction, which may occur in the small bile ducts in the liver itself, or in the larger extrahepatic ducts. Biochemical tests cannot distinguish between these two possibilities, which generally have radically different causes; imaging techniques such as ultrasound are required.
