The immune system consists of the tissues, cells and molecules, and genes involved in the recognition, reaction with, and elimination of, foreign and nonself substances (antigens) that may disturb the homeostasis of the body. Immunity can be categorized as being either nonspecific or innate, and specific and adaptive.
