| Plasmalogens are a subclass of glycerophospholipids that have a 1-alkenyl ether linked to the carbon-1 of glycerol (see Fig. 26.1). They are a major class of mitochondrial lipids, and are enriched in nerve and muscle tissue - in the heart they may account for nearly 50% of total phospholipids. Their function in relation to that of diacylphospholipids is not clear, but there is some evidence that they are more resistant to oxidative degradation, which may provide protection
against oxidative stress in tissues with active aerobic metabolism.
