Actual Hydrogen Bonding by Eco RI to DNA Base Pairs

CG Base PairTA Base Pair

The CG and TA base pairs are shown as Ball & Stick with CPK coloring. Hydrogen bond interactions with Eco RI residues in the major groove are shown with distances in Å.
The interaction at the G5-C10 base pair is water-mediated, i.e. A139 (C=O) and R200 both H-bond to a water molecule that is H-bonded to (at least one of) the major groove H-bonding groups on G5.
The interaction at the A7-T8 base pair involves two side chains (N141 and R145) and both major groove H-bonding groups on A7.
Adapted from students' scripts and their descriptions from Problem Set #5.
