Normally an individual oscillates between a high-insulin/low-glucagon state and a low-insulin/high-glucagon state. The high-insulin/low-glucagon state occurs during the ingestion of food and for several hours after a meal (absorptive, postprandial, or fed state). The low-insulin/high-glucagon state occurs on fasting. The early period of fasting, between 6 and 12 h, is called the postabsorptive state. Beyond that, it is either 'prolonged fasting' or 'starvation'.
