Lifestyle and diet may influence the incidence of cancer
|
High intake of fruit and vegetables seems to be protective against cancer, possibly due to the presence of antioxidants and fiber. Dairy products seem also to be protective. There were suggestions that high-fat diets may increase cancer risk, but epidemiological evidence for this is weak. In clinical studies beta-carotene, retinoids (see Chapter 10), fiber, and calcium were not found to be effective in cancer prevention. However, coincidental findings suggest that vitamin E prevents the development of prostate cancer; and selenium is beneficial in prostate and colorectal cancers.
