ALP is synthesized both by the biliary tract and by bone, but the two tissues contain different ALP isoenzymes. Thus, the origin of the ALP may be determined from the isoenzyme pattern. Alternatively, the plasma activity of another enzyme, such as γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGP), which also originates in the biliary tract, may be measured.
